Female Urethral Slings

A female urethral sling is a narrow band of mesh surgically placed below the mid urethra for the permanent correction of female stress urinary incontinence. The Urology Clinic specializes in the minimally invasive treatment of female incontinence and offers a variety of treatment options, including the latest surgical procedures. While a urethral sling is not suited for all women with urinary incontinence, as there are many causes of this problem, it is a highly effective solution in women who have stress incontinence.

Indications

  • Stress incontinence

Procedure

The patient is brought to the operating room (either at the hospital or ambulatory surgery) and given a general or spinal anesthetic. The operation is usually performed through a small incision below the urethra and two tiny incisions along the inner thigh. The entire operation takes less than an hour. The patient is able to go home that same day and should notice an immediate change in her urinary control.

Advantages

  • Outpatient surgery with short recover
  • Immediate improvement in urinary control
  • Good success rates and low complications

Side Effects

Most patients will experience some swelling and pelvic discomfort for a short time following the surgery, but this soon resolves. Occasionally, a catheter will need to be placed in the bladder for a few days until some of the swelling diminishes, and rarely the sling may need to be revised. With the placement of any prosthetic device, there is a risk of infection, but this rarely occurs.
